I’ve just designed a new website for a UCSD-based startup that provides retail stores with high-tech transparent display cases. Check them out!

New web design: hue transparent displays
March 25th, 2013Photo of the week for March 24th
March 24th, 2013Sorry that I haven’t posted a photo this week. It’s been busy! Next week I’ll have more stuff for you though.
Photo of the week: Bright
March 17th, 2013Flame Skimmer Libellula saturata dragonfly. It had been flying in and out of view and then alighted on a twig long enough for me to get this shot. Taken with noon sunlight and flash in August 2006 with my Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/500s, f/3.6, ISO: 100, 389mm.

Photo of the week: Curl
March 10th, 2013This honey bee was photographed with overcast noon light in March 2007. 1/680s, f/7.1, ISO: 400, 389mm, +2 diopter HOYA macro add-on. Does anyone recognize the flower? These flowers are from a big bush or a wide tree, in San Diego. I don’t know what they’re called, though.
And that’s the last honey bee photo for a while. Next week we’ll move up to dragonflies!

Photo of the week: Golden
March 3rd, 2013I saw this honey bee in this big golden flower at the local botanical gardens. It was really a perfect match of colors. I’m not sure what kind of flower this is, but if you know, please comment! Taken with my Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/250s, f/3.6, ISO 200, 389mm with a +1 diopter close-up add-on lens.

Photo of the week: Harmony
February 24th, 2013Late in the afternoon on one beautiful June 2009 day, I captured this honey bee hovering perfectly in harmony with the lavender(?) flowers. (Don’t worry, this is the last honey-bee-on-lavender photo for a while. But there are a couple more bees in this blog’s future.) Taken with my Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/200s, f/3.5, 205mm, ISO: 200, with close-up add-on lens. Flash not used.

Oh, and by the way, happy Purim to all those celebrating today!
Photo of the week: Lavender Landing
February 17th, 2013From May 2010 (a few seconds after the Lavender Scout photo). The honey bee landed on the flower. (Again, I think it’s lavender, but I could be wrong.) Taken with my Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/200s, f/3.5, 205mm, ISO: 200, with close-up add-on lens. Flash not used.

Photo of the week: Lavender Scout
February 10th, 2013In May 2010 some honey bees were attacking these flowers. (I think they’re lavender, but I’d love for an expert to confirm that.) I like the way this bee was hovering, checking out the situation. Taken with my Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/400s, f/3.5, 239mm, ISO: 64, with close-up add-on lens. Flash used.

Photo of the week: Sweet Exit
February 3rd, 2013In August 2006 I saw this honey bee eating (I can only assume that’s what they do) a Podranea Ricasoliana, Pink Trumpet Vine flower. Taken in direct sunlight with the Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/1600s, f/3.2, 306mm, ISO: 100. I used a macro add-on lens to help focus and magnify the image.

Photo of the week: Rose of Honey
January 27th, 2013One lovely late-spring morning in 2010, the honey bees were outside as they might be. As were some wild roses as they ought. Pretty amazing how that all works out, right? Taken in direct sunlight with the Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/600s, f/3.6, 418mm, ISO 100. A macro add-on lens helped me focus with that high zoom.
