Lavender Landing

From May 2010 (a few seconds after the Lavender Scout photo). The honey bee landed on the flower. (Again, I think it’s lavender, but I could be wrong.) Taken with my Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/200s, f/3.5, 205mm, ISO: 200, with close-up add-on lens. Flash not used.

Lavender Scout

In May 2010 some honey bees were attacking these flowers. (I think they’re lavender, but I’d love for an expert to confirm that.) I like the way this bee was hovering, checking out the situation. Taken with my Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/400s, f/3.5, 239mm, ISO: 64, with close-up add-on lens. Flash used.

Sweet Exit

In August 2006 I saw this honey bee eating (I can only assume that’s what they do) a Podranea Ricasoliana, Pink Trumpet Vine flower. Taken in direct sunlight with the Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/1600s, f/3.2, 306mm, ISO: 100. I used a macro add-on lens to help focus and magnify the image.

Rose of Honey

One lovely late-spring morning in 2010, the honey bees were outside as they might be. As were some wild roses as they ought. Pretty amazing how that all works out, right? Taken in direct sunlight with the Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/600s, f/3.6, 418mm, ISO 100. A macro add-on lens helped me focus with that high zoom.

Little Bear

We found this interesting Paracotalpa granicollis (a kind of  scarab beetle) in the dirt of our So. Cal backyard in April 2012. Which is weird because according to the all-knowing Internet, random websites only say this species is found in Utah or nearby states. Taken in direct sunlight with the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS at 1/500s, f/4, 25.5mm (yes, very close focus), ISO: 100.

Photo of the week: Spring Celery

Spring Celery

I snapped this photo of a hoverfly on some lovely celery blossoms one Spring morning in 2012. Taken with the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS at 1/400s, f/4.5, 177mm, ISO: 100. In-camera flash. I don’t fully recall, but I believe I must have had a macro add-on lens, possibly +2 diopter. Don’t try to steal it, the copyright belongs to me! © Ariel Lepor, see? But you can contact me if you want to buy the photo as a print or a gift or a digital copy or something. In fact I’d quite like that.

Photo of the week: On a New Level

On a New Level

I think I’ll start doing a Photo of the Week and add some of my nature photography (bugs and birds and some landscapes). Let’s see how many weeks it will last for! (Hopefully more than one.)

This is a photo I took on February 2, 2007 of a katydid on an orange tree leaf. I used the Fuji FinePix S5200 at 1/800s, f/3.5, 205mm, ISO: 100 with a +4 diopter HOYA lens. It was a BetterPhoto.com Photo Contest Finalist. Copyright © Ariel Lepor, of course!

If you would like this photo as a magnet, a mousepad, a canvas print, or anything else, just contact me and I’ll put it on Zazzle for purchase! Or if you want to buy a digital copy (for use as computer wallpaper, on a website, in an article, or however you want), let me know!

Creepy tiny spider

Monday, July 11th, 2011

This spider was only like a couple mm long. Shot with my trusty Fujifilm Finepix S5200 at 205mm, 1/400s, f/4.5, ISO 64, with flash, and a macro add-on lens.

Honey Bee

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Here’s a honey bee looking for pollen in some small purple flowers. Does anyone know what kind of plant that is? Maybe spearmint or sage bush? They look like this all year round.
