How about that 2020?

Thursday, December 31st, 2020

2020 has been quite the apocalyptic year, a challenge to almost everyone on Earth to some degree or another. You know it’s bad when giant Murder Hornet nests traveling across the ocean to invade new areas is only a blip on the radar. (Okay, they’re really just called Asian giant hornets, but the dramatic name is more fitting for 2020.) It’s almost hard to believe that the Australia wildfires happened this year. And in light of the events in America later in the year, it’s hard to believe that any of the major political or geopolitical news stories of January were even in this same decade.

And then there’s basically the whole United States West Coast that was engulfed by wildfires. And can we forget that the Americas also experienced a record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season? (I mean Hurricane Iota? We’re nearly half way through the Greek alphabet by that point!) More locally, my little corner of San Diego experienced bad air of our own right too, in addition to the wildfire smoke–and the spooky orange skies that it created–as an insanely long lasting red tide from an algae bloom occurred over the spring which, while not so major in the scheme of things, just seemed so fittingly 2020. Bioluminescent waves are nice and all, but that smell blanketed the city for months. We here were also all on edge, and plugging our noses, as we watched the U.S. Navy ship Bonhomme Richard billow out smoke smelling of burnt plastic as the ship burned for days. But that is nothing compared to what was experienced by Beirut and the devastating explosion at their port this Summer. And the list, sadly, goes on.

But what dwarfed all of this for the whole planet, of course, is the COVID-19 pandemic, putting life on hold and being a huge stress as everyone has been trying to fend off its dangers, only now with hope appearing on the horizon.

And now, after this crazy year, here we are at the end of it. And I decided to try and find a way to commemorate it in a way that is more lighthearted and fun. So I created an “I SURVIVED 2020” t-shirt on Zazzle, if you are so interested. And if you buy one, I get a couple bucks in royalties from the sale. The front is the text “I SURVIVED 2020” with the second “0” designed as a face mask, and the back is an illustration I made of a Murder Hornet in flight. Enjoy!

Photo of the week: Mourning Cloak, and Update on GreenLeaf Imaging

Friday, May 24th, 2013

If you’ve noticed a lull in posts or new photos (which I’d be surprised if anyone did, I don’t know of anyone who regularly checks this blog, but if you do tell me!), I’ve just been busy with academic projects. I’ll get back on track soon and hopefully have something cool to show for it!

And since late is better than never, here’s a Mourning Cloak Butterfly. Camera settings: 1/400s, f/3.5, ISO: 200, 239mm, used a HOYA +1 close up filter, then cropped, reduced noise, sharpened butterfly.

74 Free Social Media icons

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

So today I decided to make some free social media icons, and now you can use them for your own web projects! (And I’ve been adding to the set over the years.) No attribution required (but if you’ve found the icons useful, a “thank you!” in the comments would be very much appreciated!).

To download the icons: Click here to download the Social Media icon set. They’re nice and neutral (dark gray circles and white) and fit in with plenty of designs. I’ve saved them out in PNG in 32px, and 128px sizes. I also included the SVG vector source as well as a PDF vector in case you want to edit them or add color or save the icons in custom resolutions or whatever.

(I would like to note that when I originally posted the icon set, it contained a fraction of the icons as they do now. So if you want an icon that’s missing from the list, ask!)

Included are the following social media icons:

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, MySpace, Foursquare, Meetup, Skout, Snapchat, Periscope, Discord, Instagram, Flickr, Google Photos, SmugMug, Photobucket, YouTube, Twitch, Vimeo, TikTok, Share (generic), Email (generic), Pinterest, Tumblr, Blogger, WordPress, Medium, Drupal, Blog (generic), FeedBurner, RSS, Creative Commons, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Digg, deviantART, Behance, Dribbble, Forrst, GitHub, DropBox, Google Drive, Yelp,, Etsy, eBay, PayPal, iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud,, Evernote, Google, Yahoo!, Bing, OpenID, Quora, Wikipedia, Goodreads, Apple App Store, Google Play, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Contact (generic), Google Hangouts, Google Meet, Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp, Chat bubble (generic), Heart (generic), Bookmark (generic), Print (generic), Home (generic).

Site redesign

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

So I finally redesigned the site! Yay!

And I’m Back

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

Hello, world! My site was semi-recently hijacked for use as a phishing site. Unfortunately, in my over-zealous attempt to clean my site, I destroyed my blog as well. I’ve got it back up, more or less anyway. I can’t restore all the posts, so instead, I put up the single most popular post (Camera Settings Explained), and I hope to get new posts on the blog over time.
